Autodesk Project Galileo Online extended through September 30, 2012

Project Galileo Online, the trial technology to publish infrastructure models to the web and share them through web browser and mobile viewers with colleagues, has been extended through September 30, 2012.

To publish models from Project Galileo Online, you must be using Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler 2012.

To view Project Galileo Online scenarios in a web viewer, you must log into the Project Galileo Online Labs site and download the web viewer plug-in.

To view Project Galileo Online on your IPad 2, you must log into the Project Galileo Online Labs site and follow the directions for TestFlight.

Augmented Reality research with Project Galileo Online and Infrastructure Modeler

Some people who have tried out the Labs projects have asked us when we are going to add Augmented Reality into the IPad viewer.  Well... it's already there!

Simply hit the little button with the AR on it and then hit the little crosshairs icon next to it and you'll activate the GPS and turn on the camera.

As always with Labs projects, we're in the research phase... this isn't shipping product, so don't use it in production!

Calling all Infrastructure Modeler experts... up for a little competition?

Autodesk and HP are sponsoring the Excellence in Infrastructure Competition, designed as a deathmatch for engineering, planning, and architecture professionals who think they have what it takes to use Autodesk software to showcase complex projects using innovative workflows that combine model-based design, analysis, and visualization.

If you think that your particular stakeholders' need for clarity and vision has helped to hone your skills at planning, conceiving, designing, building, and managing infrastructure, then we're challenging you to submit up to 5 projects by May 31, 2012 to a panel of expert judges who will select 3 winners.  Winners will have the privilege of being recognized at AU 2012.

Of course, if you think that I'm specifically encouraging participation by those awesome Infrastructure Modeler pioneers who are already stunning us all with their visuals, classes, and presentations on AIM... you know I am. 

So... GO!  Compete!  Submit your work! And if you think that a little web and mobile tech can give your project that extra little bit of spice... don't forget about Project Galileo Online!

Project Galileo Online updates! Web and mobile preview tech for Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler

We are excited to announce a significant update to Autodesk Project Galileo Online that will be available today.  Project Galileo Online is a free technology preview, released on Autodesk Labs, that extends the desktop workflow of Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler 2012 Service Pack 1 into the Autodesk Cloud.  This update improves upon the collaboration capability of Project Galileo Online that was released back in August to add Cloud-based web and mobile scenario viewing capabililty.

So, YES! You can now publish your really cool infrastructure models to the Cloud so that your coworkers and stakeholders can see them in web browsers or on iPad 2 tablets!

To access the preview, check the Project Galileo Online site later today and follow the instructions to get started.

The general workflow for using the technology preview after getting set up is:

1. Create a model in Infrastructure Modeler 2012 Service Pack 1
2. Use the Scenario creator to select a part of a model that will be packaged into a Scenario
3. Publish the Scenario locally to disk or publish it to the Autodesk Cloud

The mobile app works on Apple iPad 2 machines and users can either retrieve scenarios off the cloud, or load them on their local iPad 2 using iTunes.

This technology update is an unsupported preview, so be sure that you're not using it for production applicatinos.  However, we'd love to see any projects you try out with it!

Updates coming to Project Galileo Online: Beyond collaboration

The Project Galileo Online team is getting ready to release some very cool updates to the Labs version of this technology preview.  We can't go into too many specifics yet, but let's say that web browsers and alternative platforms may be involved.

Project Galileo Online is a technical preview, first released in August 2011, that extends the workflow of Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler from the desktop into the Autodesk Cloud, enabling collaboration and cloud-based data storage.

To support this update, it's important to note the following:

• Project Galileo Online wll be unavailable from November 25 until November 29th

• On or shortly after November 29th, users will be required to visit the Autodesk Labs Project Galileo Online site and download the updated plug in for Project Galileo Online

For users who already have installed Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler 2012 and Project Galileo Online, they will have to:

1. Make sure that you have installed the latest Infrastructure Modeler service pack
2. Visit the Autodesk Labs Project Galileo Online site 
3. Download and run the new Project Galileo Online installer
4. Read the getting started materials which will be available on the Labs site
5. Launch Infrastructure Modeler and begin trying out the new preview

Users who have never installed Infrastructure Modeler will have to:

1. Install the Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler trial (or the full version if you have already purchased it)
2. Make sure to install the latest Infrastructure Modeler service pack
3. Visit the Autodesk Labs Project Galileo Online site and download and run the new installer
4. Read the getting started materials which will be available on the Labs site
5. Launch Infrastructure Modeler and begin trying out the new preview

All users should send us feedback either by commenting here, on the Labs forum, or by emailing us at infrastructure.modeler.support@autodesk.com.

Project Galileo Online now available in France, Germany, Brazil, and more

Project Galileo Online is now available to more countries.  We have added Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, and most of Northern Europe so that users of Infrastructure Modeler in these areas may now experiment with our trial capability for storing and sharing infrastructure models.

Project Galileo Online is available for users in: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

 

Autodesk® Project Galileo Online is now on Autodesk Labs

Collaboration for Infrastructure Modeler 2012 users is now alive in the Labs!

Autodesk Infrastructure customers need to distribute knowledge and data to their project teams and stakeholders.  That's why our customers have geodatabases, CAD repositories, BIM repositories, and mounds of spreadsheets that are all shared around their organizations in web interfaces and through file attachments in email.  Our customers also are often confounded by the complexity of combining data in those different sources and then getting that combined result out to other project team members in a reusable format.

You may have seen this week's announcements about our new product, Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler 2012. Infrastructure Modeler, a desktop tool for conceptual design at the scale of infrastructure, is great for merging CAD, GIS, and 3D model data into one project.  Users also need to collaborate, share, and distribute that merged information to others on a team.

We invite you to try out a new Autodesk Labs project that combines the ability to take models with merged GIS, CAD, and BIM data from Infrastructure Modeler with the ability to collaboratively edit and distribute those models on the Autodesk Cloud!

Project Galileo Online allows users of Autodesk^® Infrastructure Modeler software to collaboratively edit and manage models. Using Project Galileo Online, users can publish models to the Autodesk cloud, invite others to access, download, and commit changes to shared models. Project Galileo Online takes advantage of Project Bluestreak to give team members an instant messaging interface that is tied into notifications from the service. Project Galileo Online extends the sketching and model aggregation power of Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler to team scenarios in which multiple team members on planning and engineering projects from remote offices can work together to create and review multiple project proposals using the same data.

To get started with Project Galileo Online:

1. Ensure that you have installed Autodesk^® Infrastructure Modeler 2012 and that your system meets the requirements
2. Download the installer from the Labs site
3. Check out the Labs site for the help and FAQ

My favorite features of this release?

• When you publish a model to the Cloud, you have an instant backup from anywhere
• You can select whom you wish to invite to your group to share your models
• You receive and send Project Bluestreak instant messages that keep you up-to-date on the activity in models you're working on

Even if you haven't purchased Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler 2012, you can even try out Project Galileo Online using the product trial at the Infrastructure Modeler site.
